Introduction & Goal
Andre Chaney is a Philadelphia-based painter, illustrator, author, and muralist whose work centers around storytelling, community, and identity. His projects often involve collaboration with local youth and organizations, turning lived experiences into public art.
This project focused on creating a series of short-form videos around multiple public art installations across the city as part of the Story Trails initiative — a community-driven project blending literacy, art, and public space.
The goal was to translate these physical installations into digital content that could:
Tell the story behind each piece
Highlight Andre as both an artist and storyteller
Create engaging, shareable content for social platforms
Process & Experience
The challenge wasn’t just documenting the work — it was capturing the meaning behind it.
Andre’s projects are deeply rooted in community collaboration, often involving storytelling workshops with local youth. That meant the content needed to reflect more than visuals — it needed to communicate process, intention, and impact.
I approached this by structuring each video around three core elements:
Artist perspective (Andre speaking directly to camera)
Environmental context (the park, the installation, the neighborhood)
Detail-driven visuals (close-ups that reinforce key ideas)
Each piece was designed as a short-form narrative — not just a recap, but something that could stand alone as a story.
From a production standpoint:
Shot with both handheld and drone footage to establish scale and location
Captured direct-to-camera dialogue to ground each piece in authenticity
Layered b-roll to visually support storytelling moments
The goal was to create content that felt intentional and cinematic, while still being optimized for social platforms.
The Outcome
The final result was a series of short-form videos that elevated the work beyond documentation into story-driven content.
Created a cohesive video series across multiple installations
Positioned Andre as both an artist and storyteller
Translated physical public art into digital content that travels
Increased the depth and clarity of the project’s narrative online
More importantly, the content helped bridge the gap between community-based art and a broader audience, allowing the work to live beyond its physical location.
